LChildren today need as much free, outdoor play as they can get. With the challenges of technology, hectic schedules, and decreased activity in society as a whole, we really need to encourage free time in the great outdoors. Time spent outdoors provides children with rich learning experiences full of language, natural movement that can strengthen the body, and above all a calming effect on the mind and soul.
Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but themselves.
-Stephen Moss
When we stop to think about it, we should probably ask ourselves if we, the adult are getting enough nature time. According to Stephen Moss, “Nature is a tool to get children to experience not just the wider world, but thenselves.” How true this is, as each child can test their own limits and find their own path (literally and figuratively) as they explore.
I believe that childhood is a gift — both for the child and the parent — where both partners are equally learning along the journey. We must think of the “environment as a third teacher” according to Reggio Emilia principles. Along each forest trail, and winding road, you will find much more to be learned than possible in the indoors alone.
